The second edition of “Ultrasonography in Gynecology,” one of the main areas of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology, was published in October 2017.
The 8th Research Symposium for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology was held in the main auditorium on the 1st floor of the Biomedical Research Institute, Seoul National University Hospital, on October 21, 2017, followed by the 20th Annual Congress Meeting of the Korean Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (KSUOG) at Haeundae Grand Hotel on November 3–4, 2017. The Meeting marked KSUOG’s 20th anniversary, which saw various celebratory events, including the publication of the second edition as the 20th anniversary commemorative booklet, and a time capsule event.
In addition, regional branch education courses saw tremendous participation—the 4th education course of the Busan-Gyeongnam branch was held in the main auditorium at Inje University Haeundae Paik Hospital on June 4, 2017, and the 5th of the Seoul branch in the main auditorium B1, West Building of Asan Medical Center, on August 6, 2016. These provided opportunities for lively discussions along with vibrant academic activities.
The 9th Research Symposium was held on April 14, 2018 in the small auditorium on the 6th floor, and the 20th KSUOG education course for new private practitioners in the main auditorium on the 6th floor, East Building of Asan Medical Center, attended by many members. On October 13, 2018, the 10th Research Symposium was held in the main auditorium on the 1st floor of the Biomedical Research Institute, Seoul National University Hospital, and on November 2–3, 2018, the 21st KSUOG Annual Congress Meeting at SEAMARQ Hotel, Gangneung, to present the latest research outcomes and stimulate discussions. Furthermore, on November 2, 2018, the EXPEE forum was also held to introduce various cases on the topic of “Twin pregnancy,” which saw active discussions on the diagnosis and treatment.
In 2018, KSUOG announced the “Program on the quality improvement of ultrasound examination in obstetrics and gynecology” to take the quality of ultrasound examination to the next level, following the National Health Insurance’s coverage of prenatal ultrasound examination; it stated that detailed plans for implementation were being discussed with the Korean Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (KSOG).
Also, “2021 ISUOG Hosting Promotion TFT Team” was formed to prepare for the 2021 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) Congress in Seoul—in June 2018, it was confirmed that the event would be held at COEX, Seoul, from October 1 to 5. The KSUOG team participated in the 28th ISUOG World Congress held in Singapore from October 20 to 24, 2018 to actively promote the 2021 Congress in Seoul.
As for the 2018 activities of the KSUOG ultrasound in obstetrics research committee, a multi-center study was conducted on cervical elasticity and premature birth, and the results were presented at ISUOG in October that year. Furthermore in 2018, the committee also applied for a new project under the first healthcare and medical technology R&D program, and the applied project on “overcoming diseases for public interest (technology in response to the problem of low fertility)” was selected—active multi-center research is currently underway, and follow-up research has been planned as well.
At the KSUOG joint meeting on January 26, 2019, ongoing events and projects of its various executive committees were announced and key decisions made through organic and systematic discussions. In October 2019, KSOG and KSUOG jointly developed “E-learning education program on the quality control of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology” to help obstetricians and gynecologists hone their expertise in ultrasonography and advance their standard of treatment in actual clinical practice. This program comprised three areas: ultrasound in obstetrics, ultrasound in gynecology, and fetal echocardiography. Each area was organized according to the appropriate levels. As for the e-learning courses at each level, key contents with high educational value necessary for obstetricians and gynecologists were selected from the lectures of recent KSUOG education courses.
Starting from the newly established Chungcheong branch in 2019, KSUOG’s regional branches, including Busan-Gyeongnam, Honam, Seoul, and Daegu-Gyeongbuk, have continued their education course at their respective sites, contributing to the development of KSUOG’s academic standard.
Last year, the KSUOG ultrasound in obstetrics research committee worked on developing a Korean version of the “customized growth chart” as no clinical guidelines are currently available for improving perinatal prognosis by predicting fetal weight and using fetal growth prenatally.
In Korea, the society of ultrasound was first established in 1980 with radiology as the focal point. Then in the late 1980s, transvaginal ultrasound was introduced in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The need for society increased substantially as many obstetricians and gynecologists in South Korea began to conduct researches on the utilization of ultrasound. The serious discussion over the establishment of The Korean Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (KSUOG) began in November, 1995 after Professor Asim Kurjak, the secretary of International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) at that time, made the suggestion during the ISUOG meeting.
On January 17th, 1997, the promotional event for foundation of the Korean Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology was held at the Ramada Renaissance Hotel with 44 obstetricians and gynecologists. Furthermore, as the ultrasonic diagnosis became internationally accepted and developed, the KSUOG hosted the General Assembly and the Annual Congress Meeting on March 6th, 1997 to discuss and supplement the knowledge of utilizing ultrasound for diagnosis and treatment.
Through the event, the KSUOG elected Professor Bok Hee Woo as the president and Dr. Hosun Jung as the auditor. Also, the KSUOG enacted and deliberated regulations and principles of the society. Afterwards, the KSUOG elevated as a legitimate academic society through appointment of executive board and presentation of the KSUOG’s official logo
